Expanding Access To Behavioral Health Care: What Brokers And Employers Need To Know

The rapidly growing need for mental health services and the limited availability of service providers has been well-documented. In addition, those same providers are experiencing burnout at higher levels than ever before and many are leaving or limiting their practices. (PDF)

In response to these trends and to the growing demand for accessible behavioral health services, Univera Healthcare has expanded its behavioral health provider network. Our goal is to better serve members across Western New York by maximizing our network of behavioral health providers with a focus on access to high-quality, evidence-based, equitable care.

Meeting Members Where They Are
The expansion is part of a strategic plan that includes the identification of local and regional behavioral health providers that offer virtual options and that we are credentialing for telehealth services. These providers offer broad geographic coverage and flexible scheduling options, helping members connect with licensed behavioral health therapists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychologists from wherever they are. This is especially valuable for individuals in rural areas, those with mobility challenges, or anyone seeking discreet, convenient care.

A Thoughtful Approach to Network Growth
While virtual care is a key component of this expansion, Univera Healthcare remains committed to supporting our existing in-person behavioral health providers. Many of these professionals have long-standing relationships with our members and play a vital role in community-based care. The network growth is designed to complement—not replace—the essential services they provide.

We are working closely with our provider partners to ensure that this expansion strengthens the overall system of care. By offering members more choices, we aim to reduce wait times, improve continuity of care, and support a wider range of behavioral health needs.

What This Means for Brokers and Employers
For brokers and employer groups, this expansion translates into enhanced value for your clients and their employees. With more providers available—both locally and virtually—members can access care faster and more conveniently, which can lead to improved productivity, reduced absenteeism, and better overall wellbeing.

Ways to schedule a virtual visit:
Members can:

  1. Use our Find a Doctor Tool
Select “Telehealth” under “Remote Services” to narrow results to those that offer virtual care. Log in for personalized results.

  2. And, we have also partnered with MD Live to provide virtual visits with board-certified MD Live psychiatrists or licensed therapists using a phone, tablet, or computer. It is convenient, private and members even set up regular sessions with the same therapist for ongoing support.

Looking Ahead
Univera Healthcare will continue to invest in behavioral health solutions that prioritize member needs, provider collaboration and system-wide improvement. As a regional non-profit health plan, we remain committed to our mission to ensure our members have access to the quality care they deserve at a price that is as affordable as possible.
