May Is Mental Health Month

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 41 percent of adults report struggling with mental health or substance use, which is up 20 percent from pre-pandemic reports. Our own data also reflects this trend with nearly 1/3 of adults now reporting symptoms of anxiety or depression.

  • Depression interferes with a person’s ability to complete physical job tasks about 20% of the time and reduces cognitive performance about 35% of the time
  • Only 57% of employees with moderate depression and 40% with severe depression receive treatment
  • People with a behavioral health condition can be up to three times more likely to have a chronic physical health condition

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Poor mental health can negatively impact physical health, and poor physical health, especially chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease, can negatively impact mental health.
